Proxmark Iceman firmware explained

Iceman firmware is the de-facto standard firmware used on Proxmark devices, an open-source project maintained by Iceman and the wider Proxmark community.

What is Iceman firmware

The Iceman fork is the reference firmware for the Proxmark platform. It is the most complete, stable and actively developed firmware available for these devices, and it is what most researchers and practitioners run day to day. Development happens in the open, in the RfidResearchGroup/proxmark3 repository on GitHub, with contributions from a large community.

Which hardware it supports

Iceman runs across the modern Proxmark line, including the Proxmark 3 RDV4.01 and the Proxmark 3 Easy, along with a number of legacy variants, subject to the limits of the older hardware. When you buy a Proxmark 3 RDV4 or a Proxmark 3 Easy from KSEC, it is supplied ready to run Iceman.

What Iceman adds over legacy builds

How it fits together

An Iceman setup has two parts that work as a pair.

Device firmware

The code that runs on the Proxmark itself and drives the antennas and radio.

Client

A program on your computer that you interact with from the command line to send commands and read results.

You flash the firmware to the device once, then use the client on your machine to run everything from reading a tag to emulating one.

Stable or development build

Iceman is offered as two tracks. The stable release is recommended for general use and is the right starting point for most people. The development build carries experimental protocols and the newest functionality, at the cost of being less settled. If you are learning the platform, start on stable.

New to the Proxmark? The Proxmark 3 RDV4 and Proxmark 3 Easy both ship preloaded with Iceman, so you can start reading and cloning straight out of the box.
